Logan Cunningham is an American actor and voice actor who provided the voice of Unknown in Transistor. He is a longtime collaborator with Supergiant Games, having also provided voice work for Bastion, Pyre, Hades, and Hades II.
Personal life[]
Cunningham, who spent his youth in California's Bay Area and San Jose, was a childhood friend of Supergiant's co-founder Amir Rao and met Darren Korb in high school. The three moved to New York for college, and Cunningham attended Fordham University.
Career[]
Cunningham acted in several films and short films between 2008 and 2021, with a television role in 2016. His collaboration with Supergiant was his first acting project in the video game industry and began as a personal favor to his friends. He recorded his lines as Bastion's principle narrator in a small New York apartment closet, and the game's critical and commercial success in 2011 allowed him to resign from his previous job and take on a full-time acting career. He hosted the inaugural New York Game Awards in 2012 and continued his work with Supergiant as the principle narrator of its second game, Transistor, which was released in 2014. He would later take on multiple characters in Supergiant's Pyre (2017), Hades (2020, also voicing its early-access patch notes),[1] and Hades II (released to early access in 2024).
He received critical acclaim for his voicework. Awards include Lead Performance in a Comedy (NAVGTR Awards, 2012) for his role in Bastion and Performer in a Supporting Role (BAFTA Games Awards, 2021) for his roles in Hades, and he was the subject of BAFTA's 2021 "Games Performance Masterclass" webinar event.
Transistor[]
Although Cunningham provided the primary narration for both Bastion and Transistor, the latter's narration was diagetic, couched as a mostly one-sided conversation with the player character rather than being directed at the player. Under pressure to live up to Bastion's precedent without repeating it, the developers were concerned about Unknown's role being perceived as too similar to the way they had used narration in their previous game. However, audiences responded well. The addition of glowing effects added to the Transistor and timed to Unknown's speech also allowed players who had wondered where the voice was coming from to quickly associate it with the sword.[2]
In 2015, Cunningham was nominated for BAFTA's Best Performer Award for his role in Transistor.
